A cousin who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and later lost his battle with the disease inspired Eric Hymowitz to be a supporter of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).

PanCAN is dedicated to battling pancreatic cancer through advocacy, research, support, and clinical programs. This type of cancer has a 90 percent mortality rate within 5 years, and in the United States causes more deaths than breast cancer. The organization notes that patients with pancreatic cancer have improved outcomes if they take part in clinical trials.

Clinical trials are research studies that test new or novel combinations of treatments. Clinical research usually offers leading treatment choices and enables patients to have early access to advanced treatments that can result in research breakthroughs, better treatment alternatives, and improved outcomes. The Food and Drug Administration reviews successful clinical trial data as a basis for approving (or not approving) an experimental treatment for use to treat a certain disorder or disease. Through research, patient services, and more, PanCAN strives to combat the world’s toughest cancer, pancreatic cancer, which has a 91 percent mortality rate within five years. The organization has assisted many people, including Mary Fox, who was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in February 2018. She approached the PanCan Patient Central program and was able to obtain information regarding other treatment alternatives such as precision medicine.

A molecular profiling test can reveal biological indicators in a tumor that can guide a precision medicine course of action. Mrs. Fox then enrolled in PanCAN’s Know Your Tumor precision medicine service. She also linked with the nonprofit’s Know Your Tumor Careline for assistance in dealing with issues regarding molecularly targeted treatments. A type of targeted therapy known as PARP inhibitor has stabilized her tumors, and she is showing signs of improvement. To know more about PanCAN and how you can help, visit: http://www.pancan.org.

Houston resident Eric Hymowitz has been in construction since the mid-1990s. As a builder in the Houston area, Eric Hymowitz opened his own business, ROC Homes Texas, LTD, in 2002, which assists area residents with building the homes of their dreams.

In the last few years, Houston has seen an increase in the construction of green buildings. Many of the city’s newer buildings are LEED-certified, which means they are mostly built with green technologies. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification involves meeting a certain number of qualifying points measured based on green factors. Some of the factors that are up for consideration, location, transportation, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy/atmosphere, and indoor environmental quality, among a few other factors.

In the last few years, Houston has become one of the fastest to adopt green construction practices, placing number five in 2015 and the number 10 spot in 2016. As of 2017, the US Green Building Council recognized Texas for completing 211 LEED projects. In Houston, the West Memorial Place Phase I project was one of the notable projects recognized. Other buildings in the city that have LEED certification include the 3009 Post Oak Boulevard near the Galleria, the Calpine Center at 717 Texas Avenue, the Hess Tower, and the BG Group Place.

Factors to Consider When Starting A Construction Business

As owner and president, Eric Hymowitz oversees the construction of homes in the Houston area. Eric Hymowitz began his construction career in 1994, and shortly after, started his own construction business, ROC Homes Texas, LTD.

Like many other ventures, starting a construction business requires a passion for the industry, but more than passion, prospective business owners should keep a few considerations in mind.

Of the major considerations, funding is central to launching a new venture. Entrepreneurs can fund a venture in a few ways. In addition to the conventional loan, SBA loans are a great alternative for people who are turned down for traditional loan programs and the conditions are more advantageous. Another way to finance a business is through the accounts receivable purchase (AR), which is a way for businesses to fund their venture if they have a lot of business but few assets.

When setting up the business, consider business structure and taxes. Most businesses file as a sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership, or corporation. When setting up a business structure, keep in mind that filing status can impact the amount of taxes a business pays.

Finally, when setting up the infrastructure of the venture, businesses should consider what type of bookkeeping and accounting system works for the business. Entrepreneurs can use any of the available construction software available to handle a host of tasks like keeping track of sales, jobs, and other activities. In many cases, this software can make bookkeeping convenient and efficient.
